Know Before You Go
We are very glad you have chosen to spend your time in the Smokies rafting the Pigeon River with us!
WHAT TO BRING
Clothes that you are comfortable getting wet in and secure footwear is a must. Most folks wear swimsuits or shorts. For footwear, we recommend water shoes, old tennis shoes, or sports sandals with a heel strap. BAREFEET and FLIP-FLOPS are NOT ALLOWED. You must have something going around the back of your heel. Water shoes are available for sale in our retail shop.
Towels and dry clothes to change into after your trip should remain in your vehicle until you return to the outpost after your trip. Also, do not forget to bring something to put your wet clothes in after your trip.
Do not bring valuables or electronics or anything else that you do not want to get wet or possibly lose.
WHEN TO ARRIVE
Please plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled trip in order to allow time for you to complete waivers, change clothes if needed, and get things stowed away. If you were able to complete your waivers on-line please arrive no less than 15 minutes before your scheduled trip.
Enter the old Hartford Elementary School building under the red porch roof or through the big roll-up door on the side. Proceed up the stairs and be welcomed by our staff. Here we will validate that all waivers for your party are complete, or assist you in completing them if necessary.
After check-in is complete, head to an available changing room to change clothes, then lock up everything in your car. You do not want to take anything with you on the river that you do not want to get wet or possibly lose. We will hold your keys behind the counter so that you do not lose them while you are on the water.
AT YOUR TRIP TIME
Promptly at your scheduled trip time we will begin the safety orientation. This is required information for all rafters, and we try to make it a bit entertaining as well. At the end of the safety orientation you will meet your guide and they will assist you in getting suited up for your adventure. Coast Guard approved Type V personal flotation devices (PFDs) will fit up to a 56” chest, and are designed to provide buoyancy for guests up to 500#. PFDs and helmets are required and provided.
BACK AT THE OUTPOST
After your amazing adventure, collect your keys and change clothes or take a warm shower. If you forgot your towels or clothes, don’t worry, our retail shop has some that also make great souvenirs. Don’t forget to check out the action shots we got of your trip and enjoy a cold beverage too.
